Ben Tuttiett

Assitant Cub Scout Leader

I started Scouting as a cub at 1st Crockern in Pill (my home town near
Bristol) and progressed though scouts and venture scouts. Through
scouting I was very lucky to participate in the following outdoor
activities; hill walking, camping, canoeing, canoe polo, skiing, rock
climbing and caving. During my time in Scouting I certainly benefited
from two of Scouting's major themes - having fun and developing as a
person. The personal development certainly assisted me when I left
scouting at 18 and ventured out into the big wide world starting at
Swansea Uni studying Chemical Engineering.

At university I met my wife Carolyn who was also a member of the scout
and girl guide movements and we have continued to enjoy camping, hill
walking and skiing. Due to a love of skiing our honeymoon was spent at
Mammoth Mountain in California hitting the slopes daily!

I feel very privileged to have benefited so much from Scouting in my
early years that I have always wanted to put something back later in
life, that is why I have taken up a post as ACSL at 1st Grimsbury.

1. What was your first job?

A paper round as a lad, my first proper job was as an engineer processing oil and gas for Baker Hughes.

2. What is your favourite Holiday destination?

Majorca

3. What outdoor achievement are you most proud of ?

Completing the Ten Tors event on Dartmoor

4. Who was your favourite teacher and why?

Barney Ling: he was my form tutor throughout secondary school from 11 to
18 and was excellent at the non-academic side of teaching giving us the
life skills to complement our academic education. He also took us on
many a canoeing trip.

5. Who is your sporting idol?

For a keen cricketer growing up in the 80's it has to be Beefy.

6. What gadget could you not live without?

A digital Radio

7. What is the maddest thing you've done in a car ?

As a cub I was painted up with fake blood and sat in a car in a mock car
crash. The fire brigade and ambulance service then came to rescue me as
part of a training exercise.

8. When did you first fly in a plane and where did you go?

A short round trip in a glider on cub camp

9. What is your favourite joke ?

How do you turn a duck into a soul singer? Put it in a microwave oven until it's Bill Withers!
10. What is your favourite seaside resort ?

Northam Burrows in North Devon - a very safe beach with good surf,
excellent for learning to surfboard'.

11. What is your favourite film and why?

Any of the Monty Python Films - they are laugh a minute and never fail
to put a smile on my face.
