ROTARY MISSION CHALLENGE“making a real difference in Sierra Leone ”
February 2010 – sorry it’s taken so long - the next issue will be out in March and will include an update on the Calvary Primary School at Lunghi
CHRISTIAN HOPE SCHOOL, KISSY, FREETOWN
In January 2007 I agreed to fund the building of a 6 classroom extension at the school and as most of you will have seen in my last Newsletter the 6 classrooms were “officially” opened in June when I last visited. The good news is that ALL the work was completed by the end of July and a major step forward is that at the request of the community elders secondary school classes started at the school in September.I have also funded the refurbishment of the original classrooms as they needed some general repair work to floors & ceilings and re-painting throughout and the majority of the work was completed over the Christmas holidays and I will be funding the remainder in the next couple of weeks.
Royal Grammar School, High WycombeIn November I did a presentation to the pupils in their assembly and as a result received a cheque for £250. A big thank you to Roy Page, Headmaster, for inviting me and to the school for their great support.
Christopher Rawlins Primary School, AdderburyIn December I was the guest at the school assembly and the school raised £70 by asking the children to send “alternative” Christmas cards to each other – this was in the form of a notice board with messages to each other. As well as supporting Sierra Leone it also resulted in a “green” Christmas at the school.
Bishop Carpenter School, North NewingtonAt the end of last term the school put on a Christmas concert and the parents made donations to watch and raised £144 for their twin school Christian Hope.I really appreciate the ongoing support from the staff, pupils and parents at the school - thank you.
St Mary the Virgin, Broughton & North Newington Over the Christmas period the Church donated the collection from their 3 Christmas services to the schools project in Sierra Leone - a big thank you to everyone at the Church for their festive support.
1st Grimsbury Scout Group, Banbury In March 2009 I was invited to give a talk to the Scout group and as a result they decided to raise funds for Sierra Leone by undertaking an 18 hour sponsored karting event at Shennington Airfield. I was invited back just before Christmas and they presented me with a cheque for £360. Many thanks to all the scouts, helpers and parents for their support.

Thank you to the following for recent donations:
Bodicote Women’s InstituteThe Oddfellows,
Heart of England District Lodge
Banbury Print & Design for their continued support
THANK YOU FOR HELPING ME TO “make a real difference”.

VISIT TO THE NATIONAL SPACE CENTRE

5, 4, 3, 2, 1 we went to the Space Centre in Leicester.
Whoosh, we went to the top of the rocket in the elevator and could see for miles around from the top.
We completed a quiz to show our knowledge of space and saw a film about planets in the dome.
We learnt about stars and sat down to eat our lunch.
One Scout had his birthday on this day and at Scouts we make birthdays memorable!!
SIERRA LEONE TALK
We all know where Sierra Leone is, do you?
Sierra Leone is in Africa and we had a talk about life here.
Children in Sierra Leone don’t have luxuries which we take for granted and they don’t even have electricity.
A bit like survival camp they cook using a fire. School dinners consist of rice cooked in a big cauldron and they have small desks.
We are going to be raising money to buy equipment to help the children at school.
We want to help them to get new desks, chairs and benches, also proper blackboards.
They also need books and pencils and other equipment which we use everyday as they do not have many of these.
VISIT TO BLETCHLEY PARK - 14th MARCH 2009

If 1=a, 2=b, we went to 2,12,5,20,3,12,5,25 16,1,18,11 for the day.
We saw the enigma machine and learnt about codes.
The trains were going round on the model railway, even Thomas was here!!
We saw the messenger pigeons and the Churchill exhibition.
We had lunch outside by the lake and as one Scout had previously fallen into water this time we weren’t allowed near!!
SURVIVAL CAMP - HORLEY
We survived!! It was cold and frosty and the woods were dark and scary. We skinned rabbits and ate them for dinner. We took the bones out of the fish and had them for dinner.
In the middle of the night the horn blew and everyone had to get up and take part in an activity, then we had biscuits, hot chocolate and soup. The next morning the sun was shining but it was windy. We cooked breakfast on the fire an we had cereals too.
If you think you can survive like we did next time you can come with us!!
